GM to shut down Saab →
Oh, no. I’m really disappointed by this. They’re made of girders and drive like awesome tanks. And you can’t turn the engine off unless you’re in reverse gear. And the ignition is by the gear stick. And the gear stick feels like it’s been swapped in from a combine harvester. And these are all excellent plus-points. Obviously my chagrin at my favourite car...

Calls to Virgin Media (pt 1 in what could be quite...
Me: Hello. I've seen on my recent bill that as well as being charged for my regular package [broadband + phone point installation], I've been charged £20.40 for call charges. I don't (and never have had) a landline phone plugged in, so I definitely haven't incurred that usage. However, some new people have recently moved into the flat above me; I suspect that they have also had Virgin installed, and there is a crossed connection in the terminal box that we share. This may also account for the very variable broadband speeds I've had recently. What should I do?
Operative 1: Before we can take the charge off your account, this needs to be checked by a technician, so they can confirm it's a fault. I will put you through to the fault reporting dept.
Operative 2: No, I'm not the fault reporting dept. Let me put you through now.
Operative 3: Can I take your account number?
Me: [gives account number]
[pause]
[call disconnected]
[call again, this time direct to the faults dept, explaining what customer services had told me]
Operative 4: Is there a fault with your phoneline? Are you unable to make or receive calls?
Me: No, I don't have a phone plugged in.
Operative 4: If there is no fault, we won't send a technician out.
Me: There clearly is a fault though, because I'm being charged for calls on a line that's not being used.
Operative 4: Well, we can't send a technician until we have a complaint reference number. You'll have to make a billing complaint with customer services, and they will pass the reference to us. I'll transfer you now.
[Explain situation for a 5th time, including my theory about the upstairs neighbour, and asking if they can check if anyone else in my building has been recently connected]
Operative 5: We can't tell you that without their account number.
Me: Well I guess I could ask them this evening.
Operative 5: Yes, if you could do that, then call us back. If they have not been making calls, we will refund the money on your account. If they have been making the calls, they could pay you for them.
Me: Seriously? You mean I should ask them for £20.40?
Operative 5: Yes
Me: But presumably this will happen again, unless a technician comes out?
Operative 5: We can disconnect the line for you.
Me: Well I don't want it disconnected, and also I have to have it as part of my package with you.
Operative 5: Ok. Well please talk to your neighbour and call us back.

At the X Factor house
- So, who is my duet with? I've heard George Michael's coming; is it him?!
- Ah, no.
- Well, I heard Robbie Williams is coming too- will I be singing with him?
- Um... no.
- Who then?
- Er, Michael Buble. He's massive in Canada.
- Oh. I won't pack a bag for Sunday night, then.

WatchWatch
I’ve been at Sony Music (well, at BMG then Sony BMG and now Sony) for 10 yrs. Each year there’s an awards night for people who’ve hit this landmark (or 20, or 30yrs). This year they had video messages from people’s close colleagues. Mostly talking-heads stuff with some jokes and some cringes. I got this. Which I’m pretty happy with.
